The New York Times Names Detroit Boutique Coup D'état One Of The 50 Best Clothing Stores In America

We've landed on The New York Times list of “The 50 Best Clothing Stores In America.” The list comprises stores that are distinctive and inspirational (most are independent small businesses). Stores whose proprietors deserve praise and exposure. Stores intently focused on the customer experience. Stores that are surprising and satisfying and, above all else, keep alive the thrill of in-person shopping in this age of e-commerce," according to The New York Times Style & Culture reporter Steven Kurutz.

The New York Times describes Coup D’état as “ahead of the curve and in an old bakery” and Style Reporter Misty White Sidell highlights as having “hundreds of small circular glass blocks illuminate the interior of Coup D’état, which has the type of experimental look that you might expect from a retail space in a revitalizing city like Detroit … The store’s offerings — bias-cut Collina Strada dresses, low-slung Eckhaus Latta jeans, Sandy Liang track suits and jewelry from brands like Panconesi and Marland Backus — are from independent designers known for attracting a trend-driven crowd.”

Founded in Detroit, MI in 2019 by Angela Wisniewski-Cobbina, Coup D'état is a concept boutique that embodies eclecticism, empowerment and expression, showcasing carefully curated modern apparel, accessories and objects from around the globe also with an emphasis on independent and emerging design from local brands. In 2024, the brick-and-mortar space relocated to the Lantern Building (a former commercial bakery-turned-multi-use creative space, reimagined by New York based architecture firm OMA) in Detroit’s burgeoning arts district, Little Village, recently named one of TIME Magazine’s 2025 World’s Greatest Places.
Methodology for producing the list began with identifying criteria against which stores would be judged, including inventory, curation, proprietorship, customer service, ambience, location and payoff — would going be worth it, even if nothing is bought?

A team of 11 Styles reporters and editors scoured recent and archival shopping coverage in the Times, sought recommendations from Style reporters, editors, and contributors, and eliminated the most obvious stores that did not meet the criteria. Over months of deliberation, they visited the stores, in person and virtually, and sometimes more than once. The 50 stores chosen were all visited by reporters and photographers. No businesses paid for promotion or inclusion.
