Blue Note’s Classic Vinyl Reissue Series continues with new 180g LP reissues — all-analog where possible, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes and pressed at Optimal. Curated by Don Was and Cem Kurosman, this new run moves beyond the first 16 titles’ 1950s–60s classics to cover Blue Note’s full eight-decade span across themes like Bebop, Hard Bop, Soul Jazz, Post-Bop, Avant-Garde, The 70s, The Rebirth, and Hidden Gems.
Among the highlights: Donald Byrd’s Places and Spaces (1975), the peak of his fusion run with producers Larry and Fonce Mizell. After two decades evolving from hard bop trumpeter to funk-fusion pioneer, Byrd hit his stride with 1972’s Black Byrd, then followed it with a string of hits — this album included fan favorites “Wind Parade,” “Dominoes,” and the title track, all later heavily sampled in hip hop. A Coup favorite!
